I’m Nicole. I am a mom of 3, full-of-life children. I am the voice behind patchwork poppies. In 2011 I had my beautifully intense – ready to take on the world – daughter. Its been quite a journey and this journey has led me to start this blog. I have kept a lot of things to myself and now that we are hitting a stage in our life that there is no more “hiding” our experiential realities, I need an outlet, and my outlet is this blog.

I’m not a professional, by any means, when it comes to the world of gifted. Though, I do identify and understand twice exceptionally gifted on a personal level, as I self identify as being 2e. After much research, while on the quest to understand my daughter, I came to identify as gifted and it actually took me by surprise.  I never saw myself as being anywhere near smart. Well actually, I once thought I was smart but often questioned what smart meant and often felt like a failure. Deborah L. Ruf, Ph. D., wrote a wonderful piece on this confusion and I most identify with the Attorney she wrote on. (You can read it here).  I failed most of my k-12 schooling and graduated at the bottom percent of my class. I was an outlier and had few true friends. The Huffington Post wrote a wonderful article about this 2e paradox. You can read about it here.

Besides self identifying as gifted 2e, I’m just a mom who is reading and researching all she can to understand my children and the complex world of gifted. I am also compelled to advocate, not only for my children, but also because of my own personal experiences growing up as 2e gifted and often being misunderstood by my patents, family and schools. Advocating for the gifted community has become a way to heal and bring awareness to help others understand that the typical stereotypes are not true. Celi Trepanier, of Crushing Tall Poppies, wrote a wonderful post on the myths of gifted and you can read it here.

Besides blogging for Patchwork Poppies, I am also the writer for my husband’s real estate blog. Occasionally, I blog about my family on my blog, diary of a twin mom – the witty and honesty entries of a twin mom.

Next to being a wife, a mom of multiples, and writer, I’m also a homescholing parent to my daughter, professional photographer, entrepreneur, creative thinker, and artist… with a pinch of multipotentiality.

I like to keep myself busy and thrive when multiple projects are going at once.

This is just the beginning of patchwork poppies and I am excited to see where this journey leads me.  I hope you come back often and enjoy the ride.

Patchwork poppies Is a brand new website. I’d love to build it up with your patch of the gifted quilt. I named it patchwork poppies to represent a community of gifted individuals woven together. Poppies stands for the term, “tall poppies”. If you have a story you’d like to share, Contact me {here}. I would love to publish your story to this blog.  Even anonymously.  I know this can be a sensitive subject and understand many refrain from sharing their stories. I believe if more do, our voices will be heard. Help me weave our patches together.

Lets stop this “Tall Poppy Syndrome” together. Lets embrace each other and help make this world a better place.

With much love,

Nicole Diatto
